Population And Settlement Flashcards
What is the first stage of the demographic transition model?
Population is low but balanced due to high birth rates and death rates
What is the demographic transition model?
A chart that shows population change over time
What is stage 2 of the demographic transition model?
Population rises as death rate falls due to improvements in health care and sanitation. Birth rates remain high.
What is stage 3 of the demographic transition model?
Population is rising rapidly. The gap between birth and death rate narrows due to availability of contraception and fewer children being needed to work. The natural increase is high.
What is stage 4 of the demographic transition model?
Population is high but is balanced by a low birth rate and low death rate. Birth control is widely available and there is a desire for smaller families.
What is stage 5 of the demographic transition model?
Population is high but going into decline due to an ageing population. There is a continued desire for smaller families, with people opting to have children later in life.
Which stages of the demographic transition model are LEDCs in?
Stage 2 and 3
Which stages of the demographic transition model are most MEDCs in?
Stage 4 however some countries like Germany are in stage 5
What happens to a country as it passes through the demographic transition model?
It’s total population rises
How is population growth going to impact LEDCs? Overcrowding!
- Urban areas will become increasingly crowded therefore shanty towns will grow and people living in them will do so in very poor sanitary conditions which may cause outbreaks of devastating diseases.
How is population growth going to impact LEDCs? Pollution!
- More people in cities will cause more pollution leading to environmental problems or the increase of respiratory problems such as asthma.
How is population growth going to impacts LEDCs? Unemployment!
- More people will be in need of jobs so there will high levels of unemployment. This could lead to people being forced into lives of poverty or crime.
How is population growth going to impact LEDCs? Debt!
- Governments may not be able to afford to keep the country running and may need to borrow money from MEDCs increasing their debt problems.
What is voluntary migration?
When the migrant decides to move
What is forced migration?
Where the migrant has little/no choice but to move
