Population and resorces Flashcards
Under population
Not enough people living in a certain area to utilise the resources effectively.
Optimum population
The resources available can be developed efficiently to satisfy the needs of the current population.
Ester Boserup’s main ideas
Technology can stretch to the demands of the population. As demand increases, technology will allow the population to continue growing, for example genetically modified crops
Thomas Malthus’s main ideas
1798
Population growth is geometric (2,4,6,8)
Crops only grow arithmetically (1,2,3,4)
We will run out of food fast and the population will decline
Club of Rome
The 1972 ‘The limits to growth’ report produced by the neo-malthusian club of Rome suggested that there would be a sudden decline in population in 100 years due to lack of resources.
Sustainability
Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
Agenda 21
Is the UN sustainable development program agreed at Earths summits to encourage local authorities to increase recycling, energy efficiencies and improve public transport.
Overpopulation
Population is too large for the available resources, exceeded the carrying capacity.
