DTM Flashcards
Stage two
Early expanding. Birth rate remains high, but the death rate drops due to increased hygiene and sanitation.
Stage three
Late expanding. The birth rate falls due to low infant mortality rates, which mean more children are likely to survive.
Stage four
Low fluctuating. Birth and death rates are low. A high standard of living is expected.
Stage five
Decline. The death rate is slightly higher than the birth rate meaning the total population begins to decline.
Advantages of DTM
Shows change over time
Can be applied to any country
Helps predict future population changes
Disadvantages of DTM
Not relevant to non-European countries
Does not consider migration
Death rates often fall due to inputs from developed countries, therefore having a quicker impact-for example NIC’s
Stage one
High fluctuating. High birth and death rates.
