Core and periphery
The concept of a developed core and an underdeveloped periphery.
GNI
Gross National Income (now used in preference to Gross National Product - GNP). The total value of goods and services produced in a country together with the balance of income and payments from or to other countries.
Migration
The movement of people, involving a change of residence. It can be internal or external (international) and voluntary or forced. It does not include temporary circulations such as commuting or tourism.
Internally displaced person (IDP)
Someone who has been forced to migrate for similar political reasons to a refugee but has not migrated across an international border.
International migration.
Permanent movement from one country to another.
Population distribution
the pattern of where people live.
population density
the number of people living in each unit of area (such as a square mile)
Fertility rate
number of births per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44 in a calendar year.
Life expectancy
the average period that a person may expect to live.
Death rate
the ratio of deaths to the population of a particular area or during a particular period of time, usually calculated as the number of deaths per one thousand people per year.
Dependency ratio
a measure of the number of dependents aged zero to 14 and over the age of 65, compared with the total population aged 15 to 64.
megacity
a very large city, typically one with a population of over ten million people.
Refugee
This is a person who has been forced to flee their home area
Pull factors
These factors attract a person to an area
Forced migration
This occurs when an individual is forced to move area, in many cases to ensure their own survival.
Illegal immigrant
This is an individual that has moved to a country in which they are not legally allowed to be. They may have had an application for residence rejected, or may not have even applied for residence in the first instance.
Voluntary (economic) migration
This occurs when an individual makes the decision to move area to improve their living standards.
Push factors
These factors encourage a person to leave an area
Asylum Seekers
Person who has left their country of origin in search of protection in another country, under the 1951 UN Refugee Convention, but whose claim for refugee status has been denied. ( seeking safety, country has not allowed them to stay there yet )
Development Displaces
People compelled to move as a result of policies and projects to promote development.
Environmental and Disaster Displaces
Also referred to as environmental refugees or disaster refugees.
Smuggled People
These people are moved illegally for profit. They may include those who have been forcibly displaced as well as those who have left their homes in search for a better standard of living.
Trafficked People
These people are moved by deception or coercion for the purpose of exploitation and profit.
aging population
is an increasing median age in the population of a region due to declining fertility rates and/or rising life expectancy
