Population Flashcards
What is meant by population structure?
The way the population is divided up into different age groups/gender.
Describe three features of the population pyramid which is typical to an LEDC. [3]
Pyramid shape;
Large percentage of young dependents;
Small percentage of old dependents;
Less economically active than young dependent.
Explain why the proportion of old dependents in an MEDC is likely to differ from that of LEDC. [5]
Death rate will be low - people live a long time;
Good health care, lots of doctors, lots of cures for diseases;
Good nutrition;
Good sanitation;
Social care homes;
Less young born so elderly proportion of population higher;
Suggest reasons for reduction in the percentage of the population aged between 0 and 24 years from 1950 to 2015. [4]
Reduction in birth rates -smaller families, later marriage;
Availability of abortions, greater use of contraception;
More educated and working females, female emancipation;
Desire for material possessions or examples;
Explain why hot desert areas have a low population density. [3]
Rainfall is low - lack of water supplies;
Agriculture is not productive, lack of water for irrigation, no fertile land, can’t grow food;
Lack of jobs, poor transport, communications;
Prefer to live in cooler areas so don’t need air conditioning.
Suggest reasons why many coastal lowland areas have a high population density. [4]
Flat land - easy to build on;
Good communications, transport;
Fertile soil, favourable for agriculture;
Industrial develpment: port, trade, tourist industry, fishing;
Comfortable climate.
What is meant by human migration?
When people move from one place/country
to another.
Give three different reasons why international migration takes place from LEDCs. [3]
Economic migration for employment;
To escape war/conflict, refugees;
For education, better health care;
Lack of food, water, sanitation;
Natural hazards or examples such as drought.
