What is the difference between a refugee and a migrant?
A refugee:
- People that are no longer in their country.
- Are fleeing armed conflict/persecution.
- Are recognised precisely because it’s too dangerous for them to return home, and they need sanctuary elsewhere.
A migrant:
- Chooses to move, not because of a direct threat of persecution/death.
- Moves to improve their lives by finding work/for education/for family reunion/etc.
Why is it important to know the difference between a refugee and a migrant?
It’s important to know the difference in order to understand the human factor - what refugees are and what they are searching for, such as peace, money, jobs, food, water, etc.
To understand what migrants are searching for such as better jobs, better lives, better education, etc.

- Remittances.
Disadvantages:
- Services close down due to lack of customers.
- Aging population.
