Popular recreations effect on the health and opportunities for participation Flashcards
Pop rec was occasional. What did this mean for the development of the LC?
They did not develop competency skills because they did not have the time to refine them.
Due to their being a lack of skill in mob football what was used instead?
Brute force.
If a sport was regular how often would it occur?
Daily/weekly/monthly
Thinking specifically about regularity. Did pop-rec effect the LC health?
No. The games were not played often enough for it to have an effect on their health.
There was often a lack of rules in pop-rec. What effect did this have on the health of the participants?
It negatively effected their health. Due to their being a lack of rules in place, participants would often suffer from injuries and sometimes death in games such as mob football.
Why was it bad for the LC to be injured?
The mob games already ate into a lot of their productivity time. By becoming injured they could be out of work for weeks/months.
There was no equipment or facilities for the LC. How did this effect their level of skill?
Negatively they didn’t have tools to be able to develop fine motor skills.
The UC and MC did have facilities and equipment. What did this mean they could develop?
Skills in their games such as hand eye co-ordination due to the use of rackets in lacrosse and real/lawn tennis.
Games such as mob football were not able to be held in regional tournaments. Why was this?
Different localities had different rules. It made it difficult/impossible to play each other.
Sport in the pre-industrial era was mainly for men but what sport did women participate in?
Smock races
What pop-rec is still available today?
Ashbourne royals Shrovetide football (form of mob football).
Rural areas still have traditional festivals/fetes.
What are the two key ‘sports’ from pop-rec times that are available to participate in today?
Cheese-rolling in Gloucestershire
Highland games in Scotland
Many blood sports were banned in the middle of the nineteenth century due to the formation of the RSPCA. But what blood sport still remained and why?
Fox hunting. It remained due to its high favour shown by the UC.
Why was pop-rec occasional?
There was a lack of free time.
Why was pop-rec simple?
There were few facilities and equipment available. Much of the LC were uneducated so the rules were simple.
