majority of the population were lower class and lived in rural areas

the upper classes were the wealthy land owners who held political power
what were the lives of the working class like in pre industrial britain
little free time
lives were harsh - violence
strong sense of community that would be lost with the onset of industrialisation
when did they play sport in pre-industrial society
due to their lack of free time, their recreations only took place occasionally and mostly on religious holidays and festivals
as they didn’t participate in recreational activities, many of the activities did not develop structurally but retained their traditional nature of hundreds of years
Their recreational activities were known as ‘popular recreation’, not sport as we know it today– e.g. mob football.
what was education like in pre-industrial society
agricultural workers were uneducated, as schooling was not to become compulsary until 1870, whereas the upper class has been educated in their elite public schools for centuries

how did popular recreation reflect society
limited communications/transport - sport was restricted areas people lived in
widespread illiteracy - sport has very simple, basic rules that were set locally with limited organisation
harsh society - sport was violent, aggresive and unruly in nature and male dominated - gambling
little free time due to agricultural/seasonal work - mob football only played occasionally
feudal system - clear devision etween activities between the lower and upper class
majority of poopulation lived in the countryside - mob football was played in the countryside (plenty of space), using natural resources they had available
