PopSci Flashcards
Define critical appraisal?
Process of carefully and systematically examining research to judge its trustworthiness and its value and relevance in a particular context
What mnemonic is used to help develop a question that you want to answer?
Patient/population
Intervention/exposure
Comparison
Outcome
What could be a reason for research papers not becoming published?
Small sample size
Study didnt actually test the authors’ hypothesis
Statistical analysis was incorrect or inappropriate
Conflict of interest
A different type of study should have been performed
Bias not accounted for
What are the benefits and drawbacks of cross-sectional studies?
Benefits:
Useful for determining burden of disease in a population - i.e. prevalence
Good for generating hypothesis
Descriptive or analytical
Relatively quick and easy - no long follow up period
Drawbacks:
Snapshot therefore cant determine temporal sequence
Prone to bias and confounding
What are the 4 stages of emergency management of a public health crisis?
1 - prevention and mitigation 2 - preparedness INCIDENT occurs 3 - Response 4 - Recovery
What are the 4 levels of poor health prevention?
1 - primordial prevention - health promotion
2 - primary prevention - disease prevention/screening
3 - secondary prevention - screening/treatment
4 - tertiary prevention - treatment/ rehabilitation
What is the clinical relevance of frailty?
Severe frailty - patients response to stressors is far worse than people mildy frail. They will struggle to bounce back to baseline and eventually leading to dependence
