Popliteal Fossa Flashcards
Knee Joint
Synovial joint, which is freely mobile
Another name for freely mobile
diarthosis
What does the knee joint rely on?
ligaments
What is the superior border for the popliteal fossa?
laterally and medially is the biceps femoris and semitendinosus
What are the three cavities of the popliteal fossa
2 tibial condylars
1 subpatellar condylar
Tibial collateral
Ligament that extends from the medial epicondyle of femur to tibia
what does the tibial collateral prevent?
medial displacement
fibular collateral
ligament that extends from the lateral epicondyle of femur to head of fibula
what does the fibular collateral prevent?
lateral displacement of femur
what do both collateral ligaments help prevent?
hyper-extension and other unwanted movements
ACL
Anterior cruciate ligament. Prevents displacement posterior to femur. Attaches anteriorly to the tibia
PCL
posterior cruciate Ligament. Prevents anterior displacement of femur, attaches posteriorly. Originates on the intercondylar fossa
Menisici
C shaped cartilaginous disc that attaches to superior aspect of tibia
functions of menisci
cushion knee joint Shock Absorbers Distribute Weight Fill gap between condyles and tibia Evenly distribute synovial fluid
