Pop, Minimalism, Conceptual Flashcards

Q

What does Pop Art want painting to do that is different from the Abstract Expressionists? (Lichtenstein, Masterpiece, 1963) Where should it be engaged? What should its subject be?

A

They took inspiration from dada, made it “anarchy” and replaced it with an affirmation of mass culture. Artists did so by injecting humor, parody, or irony into recognizable objects

Visual characteristics:
-Bold, bright colors
-sharp, crisp line and edges
- highly detailed and complex images
Advantages

Q

What does Andy Warhol say is the fitting subject for art? How does that connect to his choice of medium, the silkscreen?

A

He believed that anything can be a subject of art, he was interested in the most popular thing people were using or buying (ex:Coca Cola). His use of silkscreen made it so his art was accessible and be able to explore mass production and art together.

Q

Be able to discuss acrylic as a painting medium. What are its advantages over oil? What are its disadvantages?

A

Acrylic is made up of pigment, water, and acrylic resin(vehicle).
Advantages: pure bright colors do not yellow, ability to thin it and pour it without oily residue, no sheen of oil, cleans up with water, inexpensive
Disadvantage of acrylic:
- dries quickly so paint stops where brush stops, flat and dry looking, sticky, hard to blend

A

Conceptual artists believed that all artists formulate an idea and then mechanically form the object that represents that idea. Focused on the creative process rather than the physical art object and produced visually uninteresting pieces as a vehicle for presenting artistic ideas.

Q

In what ways does Earth Art destroy the notion of the gallery system? (Think about how you have to see it. Who can own it?)

A

No one can own or profit off of Earth Art since it is using the Earth as its canvas. The only people that could “own” it is people that are able to witness and see it themselves
