What is a Complex Argument?
An argument that has more parts than normal.
What are the four types of Complex Arguments?
Polysyllogisms, Sorites, Epicheirema, and Dilemmas.
What is a Polysyllogism?
A syllogism that links multiple other syllogisms in such a way the ones’ conclusion can be another syllogism’s premise.
What is the Basic Form of a Polysyllogism?
All A is B All C is A Therefore, all C is B All D is C Therefore, all D is B
What is the Validity of Polysyllogisms based on?
The validity of all of its parts.
What is a Sorites?
A chain of premises where the subject of a first premise connects with the predicate of the conclusion.
What is an Aristotelian Sorites?
A Sorites chain in the Fourth or Indirect First Figure.
What is the Basic Form of a Sorites?
All A is B All B is C All C is D All D is E Therefore, all A is E
What is Extrapolation?
The process of finding missing conclusions in a sorites.
What is the Validity of a Sorites based on?
You must check to see if each part is valid, if one isn’t then the whole thing isn’t.
What is Rule 1 for Sorites?
Only the premise which contains the minor term may be particular.
What is Rule 2 for Sorites?
Only the premise which contains the major term may negative.
