Goclenian and Conditional Sorites Flashcards
What is the Form for Goclenian Sorites?
All D is E All C is D All B is C All A is B Therefore, all A is E
What is mainly different between Goclenian and Aristotelian Sorites?
The Form of Goclenian Sorites is backwards compared to the Aristotelian.
What is the Extrapolated Form of a Goclenian Sorites?
All D is E All C is D Therefore, all C is E All B is C Therefore, all B is E All A is B Therefore, all A is E
How do you distinguish Goclenian and Aristotelian Sorites?
Primaly; Aristotelian ones unite the subject of the first premise with the predicate of the last, and the argument gains in extension while Goclenian Sorites unite the subject of the last proposition with the predicate of the first, and the argument’s extension decreases while it goes continues.
How do you test for Validity?
You put the argument into standard form, add all missing conclusions, and see if everything makes sense.
What are the Two Rules for Goclenian Sorites?
1- Only the premise which contains the major term may be particular.
2- Only the premise which contains the major term may be negative.
What is a Conditional Sorites?
An additional type of Sorites in which the Sorites is made up of conditional statements.
What are the two Pure Forms of Conditional Sorites?
If A, then B If B, then C If C, then D If D, then E Therefore, if A, then E
If A, then B If B, then C If C, then D If D, then E Therefore, if not E, then not A
What are the two Mixed Forms of Conditional Sorites?
If A, then B If B, then C If C, then D If D, then E But A Therefore, E
If A, then B If B, then C If C, then D If D, then E But not E Therefore, A
What are the rules for Validity in a Conditional Sorites?
1- They must affirm the antecedent of the first premise.
OR
2- They must deny the consequent in the last conditional premise.
