Polyploidy in plant breeding Flashcards
Means number of copies of chromosomes
Ploidy
Polyploids with multiples of the whole set of chromosomes specific to a species
Euploids
Doubling of the same chromosome set
Genomes identical with each other
Offspring can either be sterile or fertile depending on the combination of gametes.
Autopolyploid
-Is the product of interspecific hybridization
-Arises via hybridization between 2 species
-A polyploid organism which originates by c-ombining complete
Allopolyploidy
Unit of polyploids that contain either an addition or subtraction of 1 or additional specific chromosome(s) to the entire range of chromosomes.
Aneuploids
Refers to the enlargement of plant cells due to their increased amount of DNA, causing plant organs to enlarge as well. This enlargement has been associated with fitness advantages in polyploids, enabling them to successfully establish and persist.
