Polyphasic Flashcards
Drug can only show activity in
molecular state
What’s a phase?
Part of a system which is chemically & physically UNIFORM throughout and is separated from other portions of the system by bounding surfaces
How many phases does gas have?
one
How can liquids have different phases?
By have immiscilbe liquids ex. oil and water is 2 phases, but salt and water is one
Phase theory helps what?
Understanding the conversion of solid state to liquid state
Why does vapor pressure exsist in liquids?
Because of the uneven distribution of kinetic energy at the interface. Molecules at surface of liquid will vaporize and become gas. Some molecules will return back to liquid by condensation.
What two factors does transition from gas liquid depend on?
Temperature and pressure
What does temperature affect?
Kinetic energy
What does pressure affect?
Distance between molecules
Critical temp?
Temp above which liquid no longer exist irrespective of pressure. Gas can’t be liquified no more, no matter how much presure
Critical pressure?
Pressure required to liquefy a gas. Turn gas into liquid at its critical temperature. Highest vapor pressure a liquid can have.
Vapor pressure?
At some temp for a specific molecule, the pressure exerted by vapor. If something has low equilibrium vapor pressure that means the liquid is harder to vaporize into gas. Maybe it’s a heavier molecule or has stronger intermolecular forces that prevent it from becoming gas.
Phase rule equation for one component system?
F= C-P+2
F is degrees of freedom
C is # of components
P is # of phases
Ice and water F is?
F=0
Water F is?
F=1
