What’s a phase?

A

Part of a system which is chemically & physically UNIFORM throughout and is separated from other portions of the system by bounding surfaces

6
Q

Why does vapor pressure exsist in liquids?

A

Because of the uneven distribution of kinetic energy at the interface. Molecules at surface of liquid will vaporize and become gas. Some molecules will return back to liquid by condensation.

Q

Critical temp?

A

Temp above which liquid no longer exist irrespective of pressure. Gas can’t be liquified no more, no matter how much presure

Q

Critical pressure?

A

Pressure required to liquefy a gas. Turn gas into liquid at its critical temperature. Highest vapor pressure a liquid can have.

12
Q

Vapor pressure?

A

At some temp for a specific molecule, the pressure exerted by vapor. If something has low equilibrium vapor pressure that means the liquid is harder to vaporize into gas. Maybe it’s a heavier molecule or has stronger intermolecular forces that prevent it from becoming gas.

16
Q

Water vapor F is? And name the parameters that need to be used to define the state.

A

F=2, the 2 systems that need to be used to define water vapor is temperature and pressure.

17
Q

What the hell is sublimation?

A

Solid to gas

18
Q

Vapor pressure curve is from what state to what state? And how many phases exist on that line?

A

Liquid to gas. 2 phases, liquid and gas.

19
Q

Melting point curve is from what state to what state?

A

Solid to liquid

20
Q

What is the sublimation curve? How many parameters do we need to define it?

A

Solid to gas state. One parameter, it can be either pressure or temp.

21
Q

How many phases exist on the triple point? How many parameters needed to define?

A

All 3 phases. No parameters needed.

22
Q

Phase rule equation for one component system?

A

F=C-P+1

23
Q

Eutectic point is?

A

Point where the temp will turn solid straight to liquid for both components (ex. thymol and salol) Lowest melting point. Lower than each of the mps for the each component.

24
Q
Eutectic system can be used to prepare solid disperisions and solutions. What does it do to drug solubility?
Particle size?
Drug dissolution rate?
Agglomeration of particles?
Wettability of material?
A
What does it do to drug solubility? increase
Particle size? reduce
Drug dissolution rate? increase
Agglomeration of particles? reduce
Wettability of material? increase
25
Q

3 component system. How many components in outer line? Inner line?

A

2, 3
