Polyoma viruses Flashcards
Characteristic of polyoma?
Circular ds DNA [5-8] kbp
Non-enveloped icosahedral capsid
Can polyoma lead to tumor formation? If so, in what type of cells?
Yes
Non-permissive cells
What polyoma antigens are required to take a primary non-permissive cell to an immortal cell? Immortal to transformed?
Large T-antigen & Small T-antigen
Middle T-antigen & Small T-antigen
Known human polyoma viruses?
BK and JC
Can polyoma cause cancer in humans?
Nope
Is most of the adult population seropositive for polyoma virus?
Yes
both BK and JC
Polyoma is transferred through?
Respiratory inhalation
Where does polyoma become latent in an immunocompetent host?
Kidneys
Where does polyoma initial multiply?
Respiratory tract
Which patients are polyoma typically seen in?
Immunodeficient - Transplant pts and AID pts
BK polyoma virus can cause what upon reactivation?
Hemorrhagic cystitis
What does JC polyoma virus cause upon reactivation?
Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy
Describe progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML)?
Demyelinating
Mid to late life
Often death within 3-6 months
Reactivated JC virus infects and lyses oligodendrocytes
