Where is Cryptococcus neoformans found?
Pigeon droppings
How is Cryptococcus neoformans transferred?
Inhalation
Is Cryptococcus neoformans dimorphic? If not, what is its form?
Nope Encapsulated yeast (always)
What are the initial symptoms of a Cryptococcal infection?
None they are asymptomatic
Where does the initial infection occur with cryptococcus?
Pulmonary infection
What stain do you on CSF with a suspected cryptococcal infection?
India Ink
What do you look for on an India ink stain of CSF when suspecting a cryptococcal infection? What causes these?
Halos
Polysaccharide capsule that excludes the India ink
What is the most effective test for cryptococcus?
Antigen detection for polysaccharide capsule
