Polymers and Synthesis Flashcards
What are the two types of polymerisation?
Addition and condensation.
Alkenes open up their double bonds to form…
addition polymers
What are polymers?
Long chain molecules formed when lots of small molecules called monomers.
What is condensation polymerisation?
A small molecule (often water) is lost as the molecules link together.
Give three examples of condensation polymers.
Polyesters, polyamides and polypeptides.
What does each monomer in a condensation polymer have?
At least two functional groups.
What is formed between the monomers of a polyester?
An ester link (-COO-)
What is formed between the monomers of polyamides and polypeptides?
Amide links (-CONH-) (peptide bonds)
What is hydrolysis?
When the ester or amide link is brown down by a reaction with water in an acidic or alkaline solution.
Give an example of a biodegradeable polymer.
Poly(lactic acid)
What is a photodegradable polyamide?
Condensation polymers that contain C=O (carbonyl) groups can be broken down by light as the C=O bond absorbs ultra violet radiation and the energy can cause bonds to break
What is a condensation polymer?
Monomers join and form chainAND form H2O or HCl or something
