Polymers Flashcards
1
Q
What are polymers? Homopolymers? Copolymers?
A
- Large organic molecules consisting of a chain of multiple repeating units called MERS
- Can be made synthetically using high pressure or a catalyst
- Homopolymer = made up of only one type of mer
- Copolymer = made up of more than one type of mer
2
Q
Give examples of natural and synthetic polymers.
A
- Natural - silk, rubber
2. Synthetic - teflon, nylon
3
Q
What are the properties of polymers?
A
- Generally have high mp and bp
- Tend to be low in density
- Poor electrical and thermal conductivity
- Durable
4
Q
Finish the sentence: “Polymers are formed by either…”
A
Addition or condensation polymerisation - the type depends on the atoms and bonds that make up the monomer
