Ionic Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What is ionic bonding?
A
The strong electrostatic attraction between positive metal ions and negative non-metal ions
2
Q
What is an ion?
A
- A charged atom formed by gaining or losing electrons
2. They then gain a stable electronic structure
3
Q
What charge ion do all transition metals form? (2)
A
- +2 ions unless they have roman numerals next to them
2. E.g. Fe(III) would form a +3 ion
4
Q
How do we represent ionic bonds?
A
- Dot and cross diagrams
- Both elements should have full shells
- Only draw one shell
- Put a big number in front of each element to show how many atoms of it are in the compound
5
Q
What are the features of an ionic compound?
A
- Have an overall charge of 0
- High melting and boiling points b/c lots of energy is required to overcome the strong attraction between the ions
- Do not conduct electricity when solid b/c the ions are in fixed positions
- Can conduct electricity when dissolved in water b/c the ions are now free to move
6
Q
What structure do ionic compounds form?
A
Giant ionic lattice with very strong electrostatic forces of attraction between closely packed ions in very direction
