Polymers Flashcards
In everyday use, polymers are known as…?
Plastics.
What are polymers?
The large molecules within plastics.
What is the name of the process that creates polymers?
Addition Polymerisation.
What conditions are needed for addition polymerisation?
Heat, Pressure and a Catalyst.
How are polymers made?
Polymers are formed by chemical reactions in which a large number of molecules called monomers are joined sequentially, forming a chain.
True or false?
Monomers are Alkanes
False, they are Alkenes.
What happens to the double covalent bond of a monomers during addition polymerisation?
The double covalent bonds are broken and freed up, to connect with other monomers.
True or false?
Most polymers are non- biodegradable
True, although some biodegradable polymers are available, and more are being developed.
List some possible properties of polymers
Transparent, Opaque, Brittle, Water Resistant, Flexible, Strong, Durable, Breathable.
Goretex has a __________ membrane
Microporous.
Describe how Goretex can be classified as a ‘breathable’ material
Goretex has a microporous, lattice like, membrane. The holes in the membrane are large enough to allow water vapour (sweat) to escape but are too small to allow water droplets and wind to pass through.
