Polyamides Flashcards
What does polyamide form between
Diamine and dicarboxylic acid/diacyl chloride or amino carboxylic acid/amino acyl chloride
What is amide bond
NH bonded to C=O
What is Kevlar formed from
Benzene-1,4-diamine and benzene-1,4-dioic acid
Why are polyamides such as Kevlar so strong
Formed from long chain molecules and have hydrogen bonds between chains
What forms as well as polyamide
H2O for carboxylic acid / HCl for acyl chloride
Do amino acids have chiral carbon atom and exception
Yes as bonded to four dif groups except glycine which has side group H
General structure of amino acid
Central C bonded to side chain, hydrogen, COOH and NH2
How to name amino acid with methyl as side group
2-amino-propanoic acid
What is Zwitterion form
NH3+ at one end and COO- at other
What happens in acidic conditions
COO- more likely to accept hydrogen ion producing positive (acidic) end of molecule
What happens in basic conditions
Hydrogen ion of NH3+ more likely to be lost producing a negative (basic) end to the molecule
When do zwitterions form
At the isoelectric point, the pH at which the overall charge of the molecule is zero
Can pH affect side chain
Yes
When peptide acid hydrolysed what produced and how
Heat with HCl under reflux
-will produce NH3+
When peptide base hydrolysed what is produced and how
Heat with NaOH under reflux
-produces COO-
