Polution Flashcards
Primary pollutants are: (5)
- NO
- NO2
- SO2
- CO2
- CO
Secondary pollutants result from
The reaction of primary pollutants in the atmosphere to form a new pollutant
Industrial smog
Sulfur-based and grey air smog
Photochemical smog
Catalyzed by UV radiation and tends to be nitrogen based
Acid deposition: wet
Wet deposition refers to acidic rain, fog and snow.
Axis deposition: dry
Refers to acidic grass and particles.
Acid rain causes
Acidification of lakes and streams and contributes to the damage of trees.
Indoor air pollution (sick building syndrome)
Where air circulation may be restricted. Where molds, bacteria, carbon monoxide, radon etc are released from carpets, adhesives and particleboard.
Clean Air Act
Designed to control air pollution on a national level. Requires the EPA to develop and enforce regulations protecting the general public from exposure to contaminants
Kyoto Protocol
Would have required the United States to reduce greenhouse emissions by 7%
Noise control Act
Promote an environment for all Americans free from noise that jeopardizes their health
Point source water pollution
When harmful substances are emitted directly into a body of water
Example of point source water pollution
A pipe from an industrial facility discharging effluent directly into a river.
Nonpoint source water solution
Deliver pollutants indirectly through transport or environmental change.
Example of nonpoint source water pollution
Fertilizer from a farm field is carried into a stream by rain (run off)
