Pollution+ Acid Rain+ Biomass+ Thermal Decompostion+ Combustion+ Catalyst Flashcards
What things can acid rain damage?
Damages statues
Harms crops by changing the pH of the soils
lightly damages buildings
What is coal?
Coal is fossilised plants that have rested in the ground for thousands of years
Where does sulphur dioxide, carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide come from?
Sulphur dioxide comes from burning fossil fuels
Carbon dioxide is from respiration
Nitrogen oxide is from engines
What is biomass?
Biomass is the atoms/particles that comes from a living thing. Example: dung, wool and earwax
What is excess glucose stored as?
Starch
What is an endothermic reaction and would the reaction be cold or warm?
An endorthermic reaction is when heat enters for more energy. The reaction is cold because it has not enough energy.
What is an exothermic reaction?
An exothermic reaction is when energy in the form of heat is released.
What is thermal decomposition?
Thermal decomposition is when the use of heat is used to separate a compound into 2 products.
What is the word equation of thermal decomposition of metal carbonates?
(any metal) carbonate –> metal oxide + carbon dioxide
What is a complete combustion?
It when there is enough energy to completely burn the fuels
What is an incomplete combustion?
It is when there is not enough energy for a fuel to burn completely creating carbon monoxide.
What is a catalyst?
A catalyst is a substance that speeds up the reaction but comes back out unchanged
Give an example of a catalyst and what is used for?
Enzymes are catalysts that are inside our body because they help speed up digestion.
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
CO2 + H2O+ (Sunlight)–> C6H12O6+O2
Where do all the reactions take place in a leaf?
Palisade cell because that is where most of the chloroplast is.
