Pollution 2 Flashcards
name the many sources which contribute to air pollution
1) Agriculture - farming practices such as rice paddies release methane
2) Cooling systems - CFC’s are gases released from aerosol cans, refigerators and air conditioners which contribute to the hole in the ozone layer
3) Power stations & cars - car exhausts produce carbon monoxide which binds to haemoglobin. power stations produce sulphuric acid which causes acid rain
4) Burning fossil fuels - this releases greenhouse gases such as methane and CO2 which causes global warming
what is the definition of deforestation
deforestation is the cutting, clearing and removal of forest in order to make more land for farming and housing
what does deforestation effect and how
1) Biodiversity - destroys habitats
2) Water cycle - reduces evapotranspiration
3) Atmospheric gases - the burning of trees increases the rate of C02 which is released into the atmosphere
4) Soil erosion - soil covering the bare earth, which is normally covered by trees is more easily washed away by rain making the soil less fertile
