Q
  1. What is acid rain?
A

The presence of any sort of acid in rain is regarded as ‘acid rain’. The major compounds causing acid rain are:
Sulphuric acid [H2SO4]
Nitric acid [HNO3]
Hydrochloric acid [HCI]
Carbonic acid [H2CO2]
The oxides are unable to remain in a gaseous state and hence react with moisture to form acids which fall into the earth as Acid Rain.
Buildings, monuments, statues, bridges etc are corroded by Acid Rain.

Q
  1. Write down one source and one use of CFC.
A

Used in manufacture of aerosol sprays, blowing agents for foams and packing materials, as solvents and as refrigerants.
Released from refrigerators, air conditions systems, sprays and from emission from jets.

Q
  1. What is ozone layer depletion.
A
The chemical causing ozone depletion are
-	Chloroflurocarboin (CFC)
-	Methyl Choloform
-	Carbon Tetrachloride
-	Methyl Bromide
Which are emitted due to Air Pollution.

These compounds decompose in the atmosphere and form
-Nascent hydrogen, chlorine, bromine etc, which deplete the ozone layer.

Today, the use of CFCs is outlawed by 197 countries around the world and scientists concur that the ozone layer is slowly recovering as a result

Q
  1. How does industrial wastes cause soil pollution? Describe
A

The ecosystem has been significantly impacted because of pollution, and the consequence will affect many future generations.
improper disposal of toxic waste.

Pollution Due to Industrial Wastes
The industries use raw materials, process them, produce finished products, and some by-products are thrown into the environment as industrial wastes in gas, liquid or solid, thus polluting the soil.

Natural Resource Use
Raw material is necessary for a lot of industries, which requires them to pull underground elements. One of the most common forms of leaching from natural resources is fracking for oil. When industries pull minerals, the process causes pollution in the soil and also causes oil leaks and spills that are harmful and deadly to people and animals.

Using Old and Outdated Technology
Updating technology is expensive, and there are many companies and plants which are relying on outdated technology to continue operating their business successfully. Older technologies tend to produce large amounts of waste.

The Sheer Number of Industries
There are many industries and factories, and most of them are polluting the air every day.
Small sectors that have to rely on grants from the government to keep operating are often able to avoid following environmental regulations. Those companies have been discovered to release significant amounts of toxic gas, making pollution an even more substantial issue from those smaller industries.

Q
  1. What is meant by greenhouse effect? Write in brief.
A
  • Process that occurs when heat is trapped close to the Earths surface by greenhouse gases.
  • Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxides and water vapour.
  • These heat trapping gases can be thought of as a blanket wrapped around the Earth.
  • These gases cause a rapid increase in temperature and make it warmer than it would be without them.

Greenhouse gases have far-ranging environmental and health effects.
They cause climate change by trapping heat, and they also contribute to respiratory disease from smog and air pollution. Extreme weather, food supply disruptions, and increased wildfires are other effects of climate change caused by greenhouse gases

  1. Write 2 measures of conversation and management sources of water.
A
  • Wastes from households should go to recycling facilities
  • Proper drainage system should be added
  • Surrounding sources of water should be kept clean.
  • Controlling forest and wild fire.
  • Afforestation and conservation of forests.
  • Implementation for laws for conservation of forests.
  • Plant in bare, spare land and slopes.

Q
  1. Write any two reasons of reducing the use of CFC in our daily life.
A

CFC components has a life cycle in the atmosphere of up to 100 years.

  • Harmful to environment, destroys the ozone layer [ which protects the skin and living organism from UV rays emitted from the sun]
  • Affects the human nervous system.
  • UV Radiation may damage the cornea and the lens of the eye.
CFC : released from refrigerators, air conditions systems, sprays and from emission from jets.
