Pollution Flashcards
1
Q
What elements is the atmosphere made up and their abundance percentages?
A
- Argon
- Nitrogen
- CO2
- Water vapour
- Other gases
2
Q
What processes ADD carbon to the atmosphere?
A
- Combustion (e.g. burning of fossil fuels)
- Respiration
- Volcanic activity
- Decomp of dead animals and plants
3
Q
What 3 harmful pollutants can the burning fuels create? How?
A
- Sulfur dioxide
- sulfur = impurity in all foss fuels
- sulfur oxidises when burnt - produces so2
- Nitrogen oxides
- nitro = impurity in all foss fuels
- when burnt in confined space, high temperature = make nitrogen and o2 react - CO and particulates (small solid particle containing carbon and unburnt fuel.)
- incomplete combustion
4
Q
What are the consequences of NO?
A
- Inhaling = respiratory issues
2. Can react with H20 to produce nitric acid = component of acid rain
5
Q
What are the consequences of particulates?
A
- Inhaling = respiratory issues
- Can reflect radiation into space = global dimming
- smog
6
Q
What is global dimming?
A
Decreases sunlight available for photosynthesis
7
Q
What are the consequences of CO?
A
- Binds to haemo - stops ability to transport oxygen
- Odourless and colourless = difficult to detect
- High lvl = potential death
8
Q
What are the consequences of SO2 and NO2
A
- Inhaling = respiratory issues?
- ## Can react w H20 = acid rain
9
Q
What are the effects of acid rain?
A
- corrode steel
- weather buildings
- death of small organisms
