Climate Change Flashcards
1
Q
Define climate.
A
Average weather cond over long period of time
2
Q
Explain fully the greenhouse effect.
A
- Sun emits infra radiation
- Earth absorbs some, but some is reflected back
- Greenhouse gases absorb re-emitted radiation
- Gases re-radiate heat energy - some heads back to earth and warms its surface.
3
Q
Name some greenhouse gases
A
- CO2
- CH4
- Water vapour
4
Q
What would happen without the greenhouse effect?
A
Earth to cold to support life
`
5
Q
What human activities increase greenhouse gases and how?1
A
- Decomp in landfills releases methane
- Pop inc = agriculture inc = more livestock = more methane released during digestion
- Deforestation decr natural carbon sinks
- Burning fossil fuels produces CO2
6
Q
What are the effects of climate change?
A
- Extreme weather patterns e.g melting ice caps (floods)
2. Change in water availability - difficult to grow crops
7
Q
How can we mitigate climate change?
A
- Carbon capture and storage of CO2 produced from fossil fuels
- Reducing fossil fuel use - renewable energies
- Carbon off-setting - reforestation
8
Q
What is an uncertainty? What has happened to them?
A
- Uncertainty = range of values that contain true value of a measurement
- Decreased as = more monitoring stations + improved tech
- Increases confidence in predictions
