Pollination Syndromes Flashcards
Bee pollination
Bees see the same color spectrum as us but more on the shorter wavelength do no red flowers but can see UV
Bees feed on nectar and female bees gather pollen
Bee orchids - cheaters - fool male bees
Moth pollination
White, strong smelling flowers (low light)
Hover feeders - don’t need platform
Nectar tubes narrow for narrow proboscis
Butterfly pollination
Bright colors, pleasant often sweet smell
Require platform - flat surface
Nectar tubes narrow like moths
Simple flowers bc butterflies aren’t good learners
Bird pollination
Colorful - often reddish, no scent
Require lots of energy so plant must offer a lot of nectar rewards
Birds see longer wavelength end of spectrum
Hover feeders
Bat pollination
White/pale color, fruity/musky smell
Rely on strong odors because lowlight or dark
Flowers are large and durable because bats aren’t gentle
Strong nutrient requirement, flower must have abundant pollen and nectar
Fly pollination
Reddish/light spotted (fleshy textured), rotten smell
Deceit pollination so female flies can carry pollen to another flower for pollination
Wind pollination
No attractants No rewards Typically imperfect flowers Dry weather because anther opens up Enlarged stigmatic surface to catch pollen grain Flowering before leaves expand
Water pollination
Flowers have mechs to prevent pollen from getting wet
