Pollination Flashcards
What do anthers have?
Lines along which the anther will split
What do anthers in a young flower contain?
Pollen sacs with developing pollen grains
How are pollen grains formed?
When cells around the edge of the pollen sac divide
How is pollen released?
The anther splits open and releases pollen
Why do pollen grains have hard coats?
To survive harsh conditions. Coat protects the male gametes contained inside as the pollen grain is transported
How does fertilisation in plants happen?
The nucleus of the pollen grain fuses with the nucleus of the ovule
What happens after pollination?
If the polen grain landed on the right stigma, it begins to grow a pollen tube
How does the pollen tube grow through the style and stigma?
It secretes an enzyme to digest a path through the style
What is a micropyle?
A small hole in the ovule
What happens once the pollen tube grows through the micropyle into the ovule?
The pollen nucleus travels along the tube into the ovule, where it fuses with the ovule nucleus.ONE POLLEN CAN FERTILISE JUST ONE OVULE
