Germination Flashcards
What is contained in the ovule after fertilisation?
A zygote
What parts wither and fall off after fertilisation?
petals, sepals, stamens
How is an embryo plant formed?
Zygote divides by mitosis
What is the ovule known as after it contains an embryo plant?
A seed
How is the seed made dormant?
Water is withdrawn from the seed. This means almost no metabolic reactions can occur
What is the testa?
Protective coating around the outside of the seed.
What is the hilum?
Scar from which the seed joined to the ovary wall
What is the micropyle?
Tiny hole in the testa
What does the plumule do?
Grows and becomes the primary shoot
What does the radicle do?
Grows and forms the root
Why is there a cotyledon in the seed?
To store starch and food
Why is water needed for germination?
To activate enzymes so metabolic reactions can take place
Why is oxygen needed for germination?
Aerobic respiration to release energy to help with growth
Why is a suitable temperature needed for germination?
Enzymes work at an optimum temperature.
Step 1 of germination?
Seed takes up water
