State
States possess a permanent population, they have a defined and set territory and they have (generally) recognised sovereignty. States are not necessarily culturally homogenous.
Nation
a nation is a group of people who claim common bonds through cultural things such as language history tradition and religion they don’t have to have a state although sometimes they do.
Unilateralism
is the act of a state acting/ creating policy to pursue their own national interests alone with little to no regard for the thoughts and impacts that it will have on other global actors. Primary national interest is always maintaining a states sovereingty and surviving.
Multilateralism
refers to three or more actors working together to pursue common goals
Sovereignty
legitimate or widely accepted ability for a state to govern its territory. Its the main goal in politics for a state to maintain its sovereignty and to represent it within the international community.
National interest
a state will pursue its national interests in order to continue its survival and best interests including the growth of the state. States implement actions in order to act in their global interest and maintain their sovereignty.
Global actor
A global actor is a person or body whose actions have an impact on global politics and other actors.
State actor
The government or representative of a sovereign state who acts on behalf of that state, they can influence global politics through domestic or through foreign policy.
IGO
An IGO is a group of sovereign states who work together on issues. Some IGOs are legal entities and are ratified by a charter whilst others are more informal (G7)
Regional Groupings
Regional groupings are groups of member states from a similar geographical area who combine in order to pursue regional mutual goals these might include policies on free trade border policies or economic aid
Non-State actor
A non state actor is any actor that is not recognised as or as a representative of a sovereign (or de facto) state
NGO
non-governmental organisations are organisations that are formed and work independently from a government; they often work with developmental or humanitarian issues and although they may receive funding from the government they do not represent that party.
TNC
A TNC or a transnational corporation is any business (generally quite large) which works outside of its country of origin/ registration they often hold economic power
Global Terrorist organisation
They are terrorist organisations that act across multiple states they have a political motivation us threat of violence against civilians and can sometimes be powerful enough to govern
Economic Power
Economic power is a state’s ability to influence another states actions through finance and trade. It is often measured through GDP or through PPP as well as its reliance on other countries through trade.
