What is patronage
the power to control appointments to high office e.g when MP’s were supported finacially by lords to become a MP
What did this mean for british society
The wealthy, elite and lords could choose who could be an MP for a constituency, only the elite voice is heard, both commons and lords
give date’s and MP’s number being finaced by the house of lords

what is a non-secret ballot
Where you would stand on a stage and announce to a crowd who you are voting for, easily corrupted either by the people there or your landlord
Given an example of where no secret ballots took place
In Liverpool in 1830, Costs the 2 candidates £100,000 (millions today) took 15 days. first voters were paid £15 at the end £150 (more critical votes)

the most common where the vote went to all males who had received the freedom of the city (inheritence) marrying the daughter or widow of a freeman or byiing the right
corporation boroughs
vote only to members of the corporation, usually a very small electorate e.g. out of 28 such boroughs in England, 26 had less than 50 voters
pocket borough
small borough esily manipulated by land owner e.g. Old Sarum had only 7 voters
rotton boroughs
small town or hamlet now delinded in stature they were corrupt e.g. dunwich which had fallen into the sea
