City
A large town that is the center of politics, culture, ad trade
City-state
A city that controls the surrounding area, countryside, towns, etc.
Nation
An area with definite boundaries, governed by one government, and in which the people share the same history language, and customs
Empire
A group of nations or territories that are ruled over by one government headed by an emperor or empress, or other powerful leader
Colony
A group of people who leave their native country to form in a new land a settlement separate from but governed their parent nation
Govt.
The kind of rule by which a nation, state, community, etc. is governed. Examples: monarchy, democracy, or dictatorship … The governing body of the nation, state, community, etc.
Power
The govts ability to control others- to make, enforce laws.
Authority
The extent of the power of govt to control others- make, enforce laws ex- can the us congress make laws
Executive
The branch of govt that has power to carry put/ enforce laws
Judiciary
Branch of govt that has the power to interpret laws and administer justice
Legislative
The branch of govt that has the power to make laws
Separation of powers
A system of govt. powers and responsibilities are divided among branches… Officials of each branch selected by different procedures and serve different term of office… Each branch can block action of other branches- checks and balances… Why make sure no one branch gets to much power
Constitution
A doc that lists the basic principles that govern a nation and the rights of the citizens of that nation
Democracy
Form of govt. by the people- people have power and exercise it directly or by their elected reps ( democratic or repub) by a free system of voting
Human rights
Basic and essential rights possessed by all people (cos they’re human) that a govt may not take away or interfere ex. Freedom of speech , press
