what are the major competition acts in the UK
CEE
- competition Act 1998 -> prohibits cartels + abuses dominant position
- Enterprise Act 2002 -> strengthen position to deal w anti comp behaviour
- enterprise + regulatory reform Act 2013 -> strengthened laws of equality in employment, financial support for environmentally friendly business practices
what main areas does comp law protect in UK?
- cartel activity
- abuse of dominant position
- other anti-competitive practices eg fixing prices, not conspiring with competitors, can’t divide up the market
cartels
exist when 2 or more businesses collude to control prices
examples of labour laws
NEEEP
- national min wage act 1998 -> if they do not obey business fined + will have to reimburse staff
- equalities act 2010 -> protects employers from discrimination based on gender, age, race, religion, disability (protected characteristics)
- enterprise + regulatory reform act 2013
- employment relations act 2000 -> must have contract within 8 weeks
- part time workers regulation 2000 -> receive same treatment as full time workers
why may an employee be dismissed fairly?
- no longer a job
- gross misconduct
- failing to carryout duties
what are EUs and international laws focused on?
- climate change
- air, water + land pollution
- noise pollution

environment act 1995 -> established the environment agency
landfill tax 1996 - reduce amount of waste being dumped into land fill
climate change act 2008 - UK PLC’s report their greenhouse gas emissions in their annual reports
how does the govt help with the environment?
green subsidy schemes eg Renewable Heat Incentive pays businesses that use renewable energy
environment agency sponsored by the govt regulates the release of pollutants
what does fair competition mean?
companies are motivated to provide good quality products for reasonable prices. encourages innovation + new products
