Dual Alliance (1879)
Germany allied itself with Austria-Hungary. Isolated Russia and escalated Balkan conflict
Three Emperors League (1873)
Between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Russia. Vague terms, served to keep France isolated
Three Emperors Alliance (1881-1885)
Revised version Three Emperors League after Russia felt isolated from Europe. Ensured other countries would stay neutral if one were to go to war. Tried to resolve Austro-Russian conflict in Balkans but only made relations worse
Triple Alliance (1882)
Germany, A-H, and Italy would help one another if one was attacked by 2+ powers. Increased power of these countries but involved Germany and Italy in A-H conflicts
Reinsurance Treaty (1887)
Between Germany and Russia to prevent war after the 3 Emperors Alliance fell. Failed, Russia gained new allies that didn’t include Germany
Kruger Telegram (1896)
Germany sent telegram to Boer leader to congratulate after stopping Britain’s attempt to overthrow Dutch power in South Africa. Increased tensions between Britain and Germany
First Moroccan Crisis (1905-1906)
Germany, attempting to show weakness within the entente alliance and challenge France’s growing control in Morocco, forced France into a conference discussing Moroccan independence. Only strengthened alliance and made Germany an enemy
July Crisis (1914)
Escalation into war following the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. Increased tension between A-H and Serbia, as A-H tried to come up with ways to cause war, Solidified German alliance with A-H. Combo of Assasination, Blank Cheque, and all the individual mobilizations on different countries by different countries
Kaiser’s Blank Cheque (1914)
Before declaring war, A-H needed support of Germany. Blank Cheque solidified alliance and led to declaration of war
Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand (1914)
Heir of A-H was assassinated by Serbian terrorist in Bosnia. Gave A-H the chance to declare war on Serbia and “crush” it
First Balkan War (1912-1913)
Russia encouraged Balkans to push out Turkey. A-H was scared of Serbia growing. Britain tried to prevent war and divided up the Balkans.
Entente Cordiale (1904)
Agreement between Britain and France over colonial boundaries. Was not a formal alliance but strengthened their relationship and aided in their support of one another in the war.
Austro-Hungarian ultimatum (1914)
After the assassination, A-H sent ultimatum to Serbia and Russia with the intention of causing war, made the terms so harsh they would never agree. Serbia attempted to deescalate, but A-H declared war regardless.
