Conservative- introduced a one year waiting period before you could divorce in case you changed your mind
Bedroom tax 2013
Coalition - charged families living in council houses for every spare bedroom they had
Two children under ten expected to share a room regardless of gender

Conservative- divorce process much quicker (1 year instead of 5)
Children act 1989
Conservative (Margaret thatcher) - previously if a child needed to be taken from their home, 2 weeks notice was needed. This act meant the safety of children was the courts priority
Protection from harassment act 1997
Labour (tony Blair) - couples could give restraining orders if there had been abuse. Victims are protected from any form of harassment
Civil partnership act 2004
Labour (tony Blair)- gave same sex couples the same recognition as heterosexual married couples
Differences: spouses possessions didn’t automatically go to partner

New labour scheme to help young people into work
Sure start programme 1998
New labour- helped new parents (parenting classes)
Reduces the amount of culturally and materially deprived children

Conservative- if fathers left home, they had to pay money to the mothers to support children
Discourages fathers to leave
Equal pay act 1970
Conservative- no employee doing the same amount of work than another can be paid any less

Divorce reform act 1971
Conservative- Widened the grounds for divorce - could now divorce due to irreconcilable differences and irretrievable breakdown

Labour- Free legal advice and cheaper divorce
