Q

What is the difference between dipole moments in non polar and polar molecules?

A

Nonpolar molecules have symmetrical dipole moments that cancel out. Polar molecules have asymmetrical dipole moments that don’t cancel out.

Q

What are the 4 steps to determine if a molecule is polar or non-polar?

A
  1. Draw Lewis diagram
  2. Determine the shape of the molecule (VSEPR)
  3. Use electronegativities to determine if bond dipoles exist.
  4. Draw the dipole vectors on the shape diagram. If they cancel it is NP, if they don’t P.
