Polarity Flashcards
What is electronegativity
The ability of an atom to attract electrons in a covalent bond to itself
What is polarity
Polarity is when an entity contains two distinct and opposite poles that can either attract or repel each other
How do purely covalent bonds form
Between two identical atoms electrons are shared equally
How are polar covalent bonds formed
two different atoms, the electrons are not shared. The electron pair spends more time near the nucleus
How are ionic bonds formed
atoms which may vary greatly in terms of electronegativity the electrons are completely transferred to the more electronegative atom (non metal)
Bond dipole
polar covalent bonds between atoms of differeng electronegativity have bond dipole
The more electronegative atom
has a small negative charge
The less electronegative atom
has a small positive charge
Polar molecules
have uneven charge distribution
Non polar molecules
have an even distribution of charge throughout
