Polarity Flashcards
define electronegativity
the ability of an atom to attract the shared electron towards itself in a covalent bond
why are diatomic molecules non polar
there are no dipoles in the bonds since both atoms have the same electronegativity so both have the same ability
if a molecule contain polar bonds and the bonds are on the same side of the central atom, is he molecule polar or nonpolar
polar
if a molecule contains polar bonds and the bonds are spread around the central atom, is the molecule polar or non polar and why
non polar
- the dipoles cancel out
which shaped molecules tend to be non polar due to dipoles cancelling out
linear
trigonal pyramidal
tetrahedral
if a molecule has different bonds around the central atom, and some of them are polar whilst others are not, is it polar or non polar and why
polar
- some bonds have stronger dipoles than others
