Polar And Tundra Climates Flashcards
What the characteristics of polar climates?
Most extreme cold environments
In the winter temperatures can reach -50
Snowy images but very dry with relatively low amounts of precipitation
What are the characteristics of alpine climates?
Cold areas of land above the tree line (the limit that trees can grow in)
Found at high altitudes - mountainous areas
Any latitude
For every 1000m gained the temperature decreases by 6-10 degrees
Can include glacial and periglacial climates
What are the characteristics of periglacial climates?
Temp usually below freezing
Not always covered by ice
Layer of permafrost below surface below surface
High altitudes/ latitudes
Found on fringes of glacial/ polar
During the brief warmer months the active layer melts and allows hardy plants to grow
What are the characteristics of glacial climates?
Permanently covered by ice
High altitudes/ latitudes
Land covered by ice sheets or glaciers
What are the general characteristics of tundra climates?
Short season of growth
Simple vegetation
Strong winds
Bare landscape
