Points, Lines and Angles Flashcards
What is a plane?
A plane is a flat, two-dimensional surface.
What is a point on a plane?
A point is a location or position on a plane.
What is a line?
A line is a straight, infinitely thin one dimensional figure that continues forever in both directions.
What is a Ray?
A ray is part of a line that starts at a point and goes on forever in only one direction. A ray only has one start point.
What is a line segment?
A line segment is part of a straight line. It has two endpoints and can be measured using a ruler.
What is a point of intersection?
The point where two or more lines, rays or line segments meet or cross is called the point of intersection.
- What is a ruler/straight edge used for?
- What is a protractor used for?
- What is a set square used for?
- What is a compass used for?
- A ruler/straight edge is used to draw and measure straight lines.
- A protractor is used to measure angles.
- A set square is used to draw a straight edge at a right angle (90°).
- A compass is used to draw circles and curves.
What are parallel lines?
Lines are parallel if they are always the same distance apart. And will never meet. To show that two lines are parallel we can use points on each of the lines and the symbol “||”.
What is a perpendicular lines?
Two lines are perpendicular if they intersected like a perfect T or cross. This is also known as a right angle
To show that two lines are perpendicular we can use points on each of the lines and the symbol “⊥”
So to show that the two lines are perpendicular we say AB⊥CD
What is a perpendicular bisector of a line segment?
A bisector is something that cuts an object into two equal parts. It can be applied to angles and line segments.
What are the parts of angles?
The two straight sides are called the arms
The point where the arms meet is called the vertex
The angle is the amount of rotation (turn) between the arms.
What is the definition of an angle?
An angles is the figure formed by two rays, called the arms of the angle, sharing a common endpoint, called the vertex of the angle.
