POI BASICS Flashcards
What is phagocytosis?
the process of destroying infected cells
What are macrophages?
effector cells of the innate system
Where do B cells mature?
In the spleen and lymph nodes
Where do T cells mature?
In the thymus
What is innate recognition?
first defence against infection
What cells is the adaptive immunity made up of?
T and B lymphocytes
What is the role of T lymphocytes?
- chemical messengers to activate other immune cells (T helper, start of adaptive)
- detect cells infected by viruses of humorus cells (cytotoxic C cells)
What is the role of B lymphocytes?
*activated by T helper cells
1. B cells multiply and transform themselves into plasma cells
2. plasma cells produce antibodies
What is the cell mediated response? What MHC class do they rely on?
The destruction of infected cells by cytotoxic T cells
Rely on MHC class I proteins
What is humoural immunity? What MHC class do they rely on?
Occurs when antigens are detected, antibody mediated
Rely on MHC class II proteins
What type of immunity are granulocytes present in?
Innate
What are the primary lymphoid organs?
Bone marrow
Thymus
What are the secondary lymphoid organs?
Spleen
Lymph nodes
MALT
What is the role of the spleen as a secondary lymphoid?
Acts as a filtration sight - removes damaged cells
What is the role of lymph nodes as a secondary lymphoid?
Site where antigen presenting cells present the antigen to activate T cells
