INNATE AND ADAPTIVE IMMUNITY Flashcards
What is clonal expansion?
clone of identical cells in response to binding of specific antigen by surface receptor
What is a plasma cell?
produce and secrete large amounts of antibodies
What T cells are restricted to MHC class I?
cytotoxic T cells - protecting against virus
What T cells are restricted to MHC class II?
Helper CD4 cells - increase humoural immune response
What is innate immunity?
First line of defence - skin, mucous, inflammation, granulocytes
What is adaptive immunity?
Specific immunity, cells have undergone training to differentiate between self and non self proteins
How many types of immunity are involved in adaptive ?
Two - cell mediated and antibody mediated
What is cell meditated immunity?
Cytotoxic T cells attack foreign antigens
What is antibody mediated immunity?
B cells recognise antigens, activate into plasma cells and create antibodies
What does MHC I do during adaptive immunity?
Displays antigens that are internally produced - if there is a virus in the cell, it will display on MHC I surface as a non-self protein, so cells can activate
What does MHC II do?
Present in both innate and adaptive - found on cells that are capable of phagocytosis and display on antigen presenting cells
