PoG Flashcards
Who was the leader? Give 2 ways showing how he was useful?
Aske
He was a member of the gentry so he was more capable of leadership and negotiation with Norfolk
Was able to persuade Lord Dacre to join the rebellion
Gice 2 examples of Aske’s mistakes when leading the PoG
Loyalty to H- meant that he quickly accepted Norfolk’s conditions
Lack of action- he didnt respond when H didnt go on a royal progress in the North like he said he would. This led to Bigod’s rising
Cromwell’s response to the rebellion
Able to close down larger monastries because he could associate them with disobedience
Continued to promote Protestantism e.g. 1538 injunctions of the clergy ordered priests to discourage the veneration of relics
Rebellion may have encouraged more reforms
Role of Norfolk
Once he realised that the rebels had more men in Nov and Dec 1536, he decided to negotiate
Role as leader of the conservative faction made it easier to persuade Aske that H would restore the monastries after they were surrendered
Able to persuade Aske and Constable to go to court
Repression in 1537
Executed 144 including Aske and Constable
Miller, a completely loyal royal agent, was executed for pointing out that the rebels were in a strong position to negotiate (seen as treasonous)
Reintroduced Council of the North
