setting
the time and place where the writing occurs; made aware by sensory details

a comparison using “like” or “as”

a comparison without using “like” or “as”
personification
an inanimate object is given human characteristics

lines where you can create a vivid picture in your mind by appealing to the senses
symbolism
when something represents both itself and something else for significance

an overstatement or exaggeration
