allusion
an indirect reference to any person. place, or thing - fictitious, historical, or actual
alliteration
a succession of similar sounds made by consonants. also called initial rime
anaphora
the repetition of the same word or group of words at the beginning of successive lines, clauses or sections
cacophony
a displeasing effect gained through the sound of words
euphony
a pleasing effect gained through the sound of words
concrete/shape poem
a poem that looks like the thing it describes
couplet
a two-lined stanza, usually rhymed
eye rhyme
spellings that look alike but are pronounced differently (e.g., ideal/flea or rough/dough)
free verse
poetry without a rhyme scheme or a basic meter
irony
a figure of speech in which words are used in such a way that their intended meaning is different from the actual meaning of the words
hyperbole
poetic exaggeration
internal rime
a rhyme that matches the sound in the middle of a line with that at the end
feminine rime
a rhyme of two or more syllables with a stress on a syllable other than the last (e.g., TUR-tle/FER-tile)
masculine rime
the rhyme of one syllable words or (in words of more than one syllable) stressed final syllables
metonymy
the naming of something to substitute for something with which it is closely associated (e.g., “The White House said today)
