when two or more words in a line of poetry begin with the same consonant sound
What is a internal rhyme?
when two or more rhyming words appear in a line of poetry
What is onomatopoeia
a word that imitates the sound of the object or action it refers to
What is anaphora?
when two or more consecutive lines begin with the same word/words
what is epistrophe?
when two or more consecutive lines end with the same word/ words
What is a ryhming couplet?
a pair of lines that ryhme
what is a slant rhyme?
a type of rhyme in which the vowel sounds or word endings are not identical: the two words sound similar but they do not form at true rhyme
What is repetition?
the repeating of a word or phrase for emphasis or rhythmic effect
What are six types of Meaning?
Irony, imagery, allusion, theme, tone, mood
What is irony?
Situational irony- an occurrence that is the opposite of what was expected
Verbal irony- the author says one thing and means the opposite
What is imagery?
Words and phrases that evoke images or other sensory experiences in a reader’s mind
What is allusion?
A brief reference to a well known person, place, event, etc.
What is theme?
The message that the poet is attempting to get across to his or her readers
What is tone?
The writer’s and/or speaker’s attitude towards his readers and/or his subject
What is mood?
The feeling or atmosphere of a poem
What are three types of structure?
Stanza, sonnet, free verse
What is a stanza?
A section of a poem (similar to a paragraph in a prose); a stanza is named for the number of lines it contains
What is a sonnet?
A 14 line poem that uses pentameter (meaning 10 syllables per line), often iambic pentameter
What is free verse?
Poetry that does not have a regular rhyme scheme or meter
What is rhyme scheme?
Rhyme scheme refers to the pattern of rhyme a poem follows. Rhyming words are depicted using letters.
