What is rhyme?
Correspondence of sound between words or the endings of words, especially when these are used at the ends of lines of poetry
What is full rhyme?
When the sounds fully correspond e.g. cat/mat
Example of half rhyme
e.g.
Bridge/Grudge
Alternate rhyme
When every other line rhymes with each other
ABAB
Internal rhyme
When rhyme is contained within a line ‘welling, swelling, like the tide’
What is meter?
Rhythm in poetry
What is iambic pentameter?
Iambic pentameter is a rhythm structure that consists of ten syllables in a specific pattern of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable.
It is used commonly in sonnets.
What is trochee?
The opposite of an iamb (a metrical foot containing an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable e.g. helLO).
A trochee is a metrical foot contained a stressed syllable followed by an unstressed syllable e.g. HUNted)
Caesura
A piece of punctuation mid-line i.e. A mid line break
What is end-stopping?
When there is punctuation at the end of the line
Enjambment
When there is no punctuation at the end of the line and it therefore flows on to the next line without a pause
Anaphora
Repeated starts of lines.
I try to hope
I try to resist
I try to break free.
