What is a motif?
A motif is a symbolic image or idea that appears frequently in a story. Motifs can be symbols, sounds, actions, ideas or words. Motifs strengthen a story by adding images and ideas that relate to the theme(s) of a narrative
What is a symbol?
A symbol is any image or thing that stands for something else.
What are the four sentence moods?
Imperative
Exclamatory
Interrogative
Declarative
What is imperative sentence mood?
A command sentence - ‘sit down’, ‘be quiet’
What is exclamatory sentence mood?
A sentence which ends with an exclamation mark
What is interrogative sentence mood?
A question
What is declarative sentence mood?
A statement - ‘The sky is blue’ - If you choose to analyse this, you must explain the EFFECT of the sentence being declarative e.g. It displays the character’s unwavering certainty
What is foregrounding?
When a writer draws attention to a particular word, phrase or sentence by placing it early on in the text/sentence
What is end-focusing?
When a writer chooses to place a word, phrase or sentence at the end of the text/sentence to achieve a particular effect.
What is alliteration?
Repeated consonant sounds
What is assonance?
Repeated vowel sounds
What is asyndetic listing?
Listing without conjunctions but with commas
What is syndetic listing?
Listing with conjunctions like and/or
What is a noun?
A naming word, a ‘thing’
What is a concrete noun?
A noun denoting a physical, material object rather than an abstract quality, state or action
